Overview of Serbian Tricolour Hounds

The Serbian Tricolour Hound is a breed of dog of the hound type. Formerly called the Yugoslavian Tricolour Hound, the name was changed for clarity after the break up of Yugoslavia in 1991. The breed was first exhibited at shows in 1950. At one time it was considered a variation of the Serbian Hound (Serbian Mountain Hound), but was recognised by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale as a separate breed in 1961.

The Serbian Tricolour Hound is a medium-large scenthound that is hunted as a running hound (free running to seek game on its own, not on a leash.) It is used on feral pigs or wild boar and other large game as well as hare and fox.

Appearance

Ideal height for show purposes is 51cms/20ins at the withers, although hunting dogs may be taller. Weight around 25kgs/55lbs. The short coat is black and tan with a characteristic white front.

Temperament

Like other hounds hunted in packs, the Serbian Tricolour Hound should be tolerant of other dogs, not be overly aggressive or shy. Hunting hounds in general make poor house dogs, but in recent times it has been taken out of its native range and marketed in other countries as a rare breed for individuals wanting a fashionably unique pet.
