What Makes A Dog Chew
All dogs are known to bark, to dig, to roll in mud, to scratch and to chew. Dogs are well loved pets. After all, these loyal and loving animals have made a significant difference to humans way of life. However, it cannot be denied that some of the unwanted behaviors of the pet would make an owner want to leave the pet to a rescue center. Destructive chewing is one of the most common concerns of pet parents. No pet owner would want to constantly replace the things destroyed by the dog's indiscriminate chewing habit.
It is natural for dogs to chew. Three month old puppies are commonly seen starting to exercise the gums and teeth by chewing . Nature has not provided dogs with hands thus the mouth and the teeth are used by puppies to explore their environment . These lovable fur balls are forever curious and gnawing at things is their way of learning about the environment . A puppy's inclination to chew gets stronger when it starts to teeth. Teethers are commonly given to teething babies to lessen the pain and to strengthen the gums. Puppies that are not provided with chew toys would find their own teethers to manage their teething pains. This indiscriminate chewing can have dangerous results. A dog that has been chewing can swallow an object that can create a life threatening blockage. The chewing habit of puppies can be managed as it would be an easy matter to confine a small dog and provide it with harmless chew toys. The excessive chewing habit is noticed to gradually decrease as the puppy matures.
An issue that concerns most pet owners is when a mature well behaved dog develops a destructive chewing habit. There has to be an underlying reason for the dog's destructive behavior. Boredom, loneliness, inactivity are the most common causes of destructive chewing. Knowing why dogs chew is only the first step. You must also know what to do when it chews. Dogs are social animals. A cat can satisfactorily exist lying around and being idle all day but not a dog. Being a social animal, a dog would need a member of its human family or another dog to play with. In spite the famed canine intelligence, dogs are expected not too know the value things. A dog pining for its master would be enticed by the shoe that has the master's scent. A dog would require opportunities where it can expend its excess energies. Dog owners must be aware that it would not be a good idea to confine the pet with no toys or playmate inside the house as with most certainty, the dog will develop into a destructive pet.
