Service Dogs
These remarkable dogs can act as eyes for blind persons, ears for deaf persons, or hands for people with other handicaps. In the case of a see and eye dog they will lead their person carefully navigating around barriers or things which may cause the person to stumble. See and eye dogs also are capable of watching traffic to determine when it is safe to cross a busy street and many other amazing tasks. Hearing ear dogs notify their person when the doorbell rings, the phone rings, or an alarm sounds. Other service Dogs can pick up something their owner may have dropped, or hand things to someone for their owner. Many different breeds can be trained as service dogs but we have marked this as an ability for only the breeds most commonly used. Some people have joked that service dogs are so smart they can make proper change. While I have never witnessed this, I have seen a service dog take a wallet out of a backpack and hand it to the cashier at a cafe. These dogs really are amazing.
